About One Way New Zealand

So what's all this about then?

Hello, we are the Rays, Craig, Rachel and Myles our son. In September 2007 we started out on a trip / holiday of discovery to travel through New Zealand in order to find out more about the country, the people and its culture. After spending all our lives in the UK we are eager to find out if our lives could be better in another country? Is New Zealand somewhere we could emigrate to - we will endeavor to find this out along the way, and will record our thoughts and feelings of New Zealand and what we think it has to offer.

In the process of putting this blog together we have decided also to try and bring together lots of information on the different regions, towns and cities of New Zealand. Information on immigration, travel, places to stay etc. We also plan to produce a weekly podcast featuring some of the people we meet on our travels. All of this, in the hope that this site will become a valuable resource for others to find out more about New Zealand.

We booked our flights - made the trip of a lifetime and gathered our thoughts, feelings, photos and videos. Feel free to travel along with us!

Useful things we travel with...

Chariot Carrier

Myles's chariot! What a fantastic piece of kit. Bought this in the US after seeing it in Canada. It's a stroller, an off road buggy with suspension, a cycle trailer and you can even put skis on it! Wouldn't go anywhere without it - You can find out more and see it in action here

Our Travel Insurance

Used World Nomads for our annual policy for quite a while - They were recommended by Lonely Planet and Rob (Our global travelling friend!) also uses them - Good enough for him then it's good enough for us! Not sure if they are the cheapest but you do get what you pay for.

Canon Camera

We use a Canon Ixus camera for all the photos and videos on the site. The size and quality is unbeatable - a great travelling stills and video camera in one! We got ours from Amazon because of their good returns policy and the online reviews from other users-Amazon reviews on this camera

Car Hire Worldwide

We've used loads of car hire companies over the years and we keep on coming back to auto-europe. They are usually the cheapest worldwide and the price includes all insurance / CDW etc,

Brilliant multi-tool. Built like a tank and small enough to fit anywhere. Wouldn't leave home without it - Got us out of a few 'sticky' situations.

Snow, Deer and Terminal 3

We woke this morning to the rare site of a snow covered London. Not just a dusting but hopefully not enough to cause any flight troubles. After checking out of the hotel we headed over to Richmond park for a quick antidote to London driving before heading off to Heathrow.

Our last day in New Zealand (For a while)

So it's our last day in New Zealand - at least for a while. We have being staying with Pete, Sara and Anna for the weekend before our flight out this evening. We're both feeling quite emotional today. New Zealand really has captured our hearts, Myles' also. It seemed fitting to go down to the beach and playground on more time before we leave.

Pahutakaua Trees and Rangitoto

Well we take some time to drive over to Auckland's' eastern bays to see if the Pahutakaua had started to flower - We so want to see one in full bloom before we leave - though it's still a little early - We would stand a much better chance later in December but hey ho. Hence the nickname of the Kiwi Christmas tree.

Auckland to Wellington Flight

Well we needed to go back down to Wellington for a few days and through we'd take an internal flight. It's a full days drive from Auckland to Wellington - Some people with an air of bravado will tell you that they can drive it in a few hours (!) but the days when we used to 'enjoy' that type of breakneck non stop journey are long gone - and we want to make the most of our precious remaining days in New Zealand.

Auckland BBQ - Blockhouse Bay

Pete and Sara have been fantastic hosts on friends during this trip. We headed back down from our group trip to the Northland to stay with them for a couple of nights before we take an internal flight down to Wellington for a few days to sort out some visa and work bits and pieces.

St Heliers Bay - Auckland Eastern Bays and an Expat Meetup!

We made our way over to Auckland’s eastern bays - a series of beaches and communities spreading out from the city along a great road that hugs the coast - There is a cycle path the whole distance full of joggers, cyclists and people out walking their dogs and children! We headed for the furthest - St Heliers bay

Cornwallis Beach, Waitakere

We arrive at Pete & Sara’s in Blockhouse Bay after dropping Rob at the backpackers in central Auckland. We plan on staying a couple of days with them before heading off to the Northland. Pete & Sara have been so much fun to stay with and Myles loves Anna. We arrive late in the afternoon and get an early night after our lack of sleep the previous night in Taupo!
